J.V.B.
Hi! My name is Jolie V. Brownell,
I am a 22-year-old, published and award-winning researcher, writer, and poet. Currently, I am pursuing an undergraduate degree at Loyola Marymount University, majoring in Women and Gender Studies and minoring in African American Studies. Passionate about radical BIPOC and Queer justice, my academic and career interests land between critique and creativity, including poetry, media/performance studies, queer of color critique, adoption studies, and diversity, equity, and inclusion models, policies, and programs.
I believe both creativity and critical thinking are not possible without the other. One cannot critically think without pushing the bounds of what is possible. Creativity invites us to not only think “outside the box,” but to also seek out the origin of the box, question the maintenance of the box, and dare to refuse the confinement of such box. All of my work, then, is invested in this critical engagement, refusal, and shifting towards something else: the possibility outside the box. uplifting BIPOC voices and experiences and deconstructing interlocking structures of oppression.
