Full Description:
“You’re cute, but are you woke?” I always saw this as a possible pick-up line. Steal it. Use it...and let me know if it’s any good.
But honestly, what is wokeness? A bandwagon liberals love to jump on? A pathway to black acceptance for white folks? A trend that makes you look politically correct? Or is it more of an awakening, a new understanding of social injustice? However you define it, let’s talk about it.
Buuut, let’s not just focus on the #blacklivesmatter vs. #alllivesmatter debates (while they are extremely important), let’s also talk about the things we don’t necessarily pair with wokeness. Let’s talk pleasure, trauma, healing, vulnerability, justice, and the intersectionality within all of these...and let’s do it through poetry.
Like all my work, I name this series a poetic memoir, where I use poetry to journey towards grasping wokeness; questioning it, redefining it, and locating it within my own intersections of identities to understand what it means for me. Through poetry, I pair desire with pain, old thinking with new revelations, sexuality with liberation, religion with pleasure, trauma with justice, and other complex and contradicting human emotions and experiences we don’t often pair together, let alone talk about.
We are rarely ever just one thing. We are allowed to be two things at once, to be contradictions. Through poetry, I have found wokeness to be
located within these contradictions.

REVIEWS
“Jolie is a spectacular writer, yes. But listen close to her words, they will tell you she’s a magician, a teacher, a healer, and a friend. An artist with letters, spaces and punctuation as her brush-stokes. An astrologer who brings light to which stars to follow as a guide towards liberation, towards home.“ - Gina G.

“I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone who wants to continue to learn and unlearn. Jolie has a very unique way of highlighting the distinct needs of so many groups while capturing the underlying feelings of what it means to be human. Her poetry gets you to connect with your own lived experiences and put thought into how your experiences and choices have impacted others while giving you opportunities for reframing, change, and growth. And I love the use of bold, bright color in this ebook. It evokes powerful emotions that pair beautifully with the powerful sentiment in her words.” - Kate M.
